Rose does both physical and occupational therapy (gross and fine motor skills) to help her gain strength as she has inherently low muscle tone. Every six months she's given a few tests, and her therapists write up a progress report. This is for our records as well as to show the program First Steps, which funds the PT/OT she is currently a part of, what we're doing and what progress Rose is making.
My favorite line for her OT report? "She has decreased her drooling and
does not mouth all toys as before, other than crayons occasionally or when curious about an unfamiliar textured object." Bobby and I both laughed out loud when we read that. Rose used to be a drool monster, but part of her OT was teaching her how to hold her mouth closed and how to suck in her saliva - and it's worked! It's a crazy difference. Kids with low muscle tone tend to balance themselves by opening their mouths when working on something hard, but as she grows stronger, Rose is learning to keep it closed.
She is doing great in both OT and PT and we have decided to keep her in it for the next six months. We only pay $20 a month for four hours of one-on-one sessions, and both her OT and PT think there is a lot to be gained in increasing Rose's quality of movement. In OT we're going to be working on her bi-lateral mid-line crossing (think picking something up with her left hand to place on her right side, or - later, writing or reading) which she rarely does and in PT her core strength and her hip control.
I wonder what fun strides she'll make in the next six months!

Rose, Lore-Master
This morning Rose and I made scrambled eggs and smoothies for breakfast. She was sitting on the counter and helping me first measure berries and such, and then crack eggs into a big liquid mixing cup for the scramble.
Somehow (I think it may have been partly my fault), she leaned forward suddenly, and knocked the mixing cup onto the floor. I tried to catch it on the way down, failed, and there were eggs all over me and the floor.
I called Bobby and he helped me wipe it up (raw egg + pregnancy + floor = gross) as we reassured Rose we weren't upset and we had more eggs. We finished making breakfast and everything was fine.
An hour or so later, Rose was in her room playing with her stuffed animals. In her sing-songy voice, I heard the longest monologue she's ever delivered:
"I was sitting on counter helping Mommy cwack eggs, and I spilled eggs all on da' floor, and Mommy called Daddy and they clean up da' eggs and say 'Wose, it's okay!' and then Mommy get mo' eggs in da' fwidge and we cwack 'em again and make eggs fo' bweakfast!" (ended with a high note of glee).
I was kind of shocked to hear this level of description, and her inflection was awesome. She talks kind of a lot...but...if you've met us... : )

Bunny Ears

We took Rose 'trick or treating' at Boo at the Zoo. The Louisville Zoo sets up a fun after-hours trick or treat route with different themes (storybook, Harry Potter, Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and the kids walk through and get treats. Rose didn't really get what was going on, but did enjoy some M&Ms. Mostly she asked where the animals where (off display!). She seemed to understand that they were 'nigh-nigh' pretty well, but I think next year Boo at the Zoo will probably have more of a fun quotient. : )

Rose Cooks!
Rose loves helping her mama cook. And I love to have my little first mate along, although sometimes it can get difficult. See: two pans on the stove and a 28 lbs. toddler asking me to 'caw-wy? caw-wy?' (carry) her so she can see the action.
Sometimes we just mix up the goods out on the kitchen table. Here is Rose helping with her favorite "cake-cakes!" She even got to help me flip them. : )

What's New with Rose?
Rose is growing and talking and everyday becoming more and more a little girl and not just a baby! It's bittersweet but also very fun.
What does she like to eat?
Blueberries, pancakes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, fish, cheese, avocado and prune sauce. She LOVES prune sauce.
What does she like to play?
She loves to take care of her stuffed animal, Lamby, and her other little snugglies and baby dolls. Lamby gets the most attention: snacks in Rose's highchair, fresh diapers, naps, and 'baths' in her emptied-out toy bins. She also really enjoying her Fisher-Price ring stacker and her shape sorter - she's getting very good at putting the shapes in.
She also loves to "play out-sigh??!?!" as she frantically asks everyday. She loves walking around outside, pointing and signing and speaking about her favorite things - signs for bird and flower, and excited "Gwass! Wa-wa!" We take her to Southern's campus - the main quad/plaza/whatever you call it is a big square of beautiful lawn with pathways all around with plenty of flowers, with stairs and a fountain nearby. We actually walked around there for an hour this morning. Our new MO is taking Rose outsides in both the morning and afternoon so she can explore and wear herself out, and then naps and sleeping come a lot easier!
Baths
She loves baths, especially because I just got her some Burt's Bees bubble bath, which smells really good and makes fun bubbles. She puts her bath toys in a "bow" or boat (again, an empty container from her toy shelf) and likes to sail them before capsizing into bubbles.
Books
Rose has very definitive opinions on books. She loves them and knows which ones she wants to read at what time. It's pretty cute. Bobby will hold one after another up for her to see and she will say, "No. No. No. No. YESH!" Recent favorites are anything by Dr. Seuss, Ellie (aka Oliver) the Elephant, a few different board books, and any book with the alphabet or numbers. I picked up Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom for her in Target a few days ago, and I was REALLY suprised when she opened it and said "Ah Bee Seeeees!" Don't think she knows the letters individually yet, but she recognizes them! We've also realized we can get a little extra sleep if we stack some her favorites at the opposite end of the crib from where she's sleeping. When she wakes up, she looks through them quietly before calling for us.
We've also started checking out books on tape at the library. We've been listening to The Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh and Kipling's Just-So Stories. She takes on a very serious expression when these are playing in the car, and will sometimes mimic the words. (So when Christopher Robin pulls Pooh down the stairs - "thump, thump" Rose goes "Ump! Ump!"). It's nice for me too - I think we'll just keep listening through classics!
Words
A ton of words! I don't even think I can recall them all. But she's starting to put two words together now - "Byebye Mommy," "Milk pleash", "Lamby gaga" (lamby bath), and so on. She also likes learning people's name, especially her buddies at church. "Wooth, Si, Ya-Ya, Nay and JuJu," translate to Ruth, Silas, Josiah, Nate and Juliet. It's really cute!
All I can think of for now. I will post new pictures soon!

For Jane
Rose loves roasted seaweed - the sheets you would usually use as an accompaniment to something else. She'll try to dive into the cart from her little seat if she sees me buy them in the grocery. She loves sweet things, but certainly favors salty over sweet. We try to keep it to a minimum, and she loves when she gets her favorite treats.

Blueberries
Here is a video of Rose from dinner on Friday.
A couple of things: she got her shirt completely soaked with water, so I took it off and didn't put on another because we had noodles and bolognese ( = insta-messy). Behind Rose are boxes of Bobby's books (which she has smeared food on, yuck) that will shortly being put in bookcases...as soon as we go to Cincinnati to buy some. On top of that is sewing gear and bills and such. Apartments....you gotta multi-task! : )

A Long...Break and Some Good News
I fell off the blogging train of late. I didn't realize my last post was three months ago! Many good things have happened to the Jamiesons since then, one of which is that Rose started walking!
This was actually about two months ago, and she is doing quite well now! She walks most everywhere (though she is still a bit unstable) and loves to explore. I think that is where you find me blogging less.
We are going to continue with physical therapy, though our beloved PT, Michelle, recently moved. Rose will be receiving PT 2-3 times a month through First Steps, and now we're going to be working on her abs, among other things. Rose is actually better at walking than she is at unsupported sitting - so her core has some muscle, but not much. We hope to build those up to increase her quality of movement and her ease of movement, especially as she grows.
We're super grateful for her progress! She's quite a tremedous handful, but we're very excited for it. To think than in January ( at 12 months) she couldn't stand or pull herself up....very exciting indeed!

Physical Therapy
A few posts down ("We're Going to the Zoo") you may have noticed Rose's new sneakers - the white and pink $26 dollar Nikes ones.
Rose got her new kicks because she has started physical therapy, and the shoes were recommended by her physical therapist, Michelle.
Why is Rose in physical therapy? Rose has something called low muscle tone (how her muscles are at rest), which basically means she is a very floppy, 'lucy-goosey' sorta kid. One of the results of this flexibility means her muscles have never been able or trained to function correctly, so Rose has spent all of her life developing 'compensations' (see: rolling to get everywhere from six months - one year). She almost never engages her abs (in any direction), has very wobbly legs, and when standing puts all her strength on her arms.
Our good friend (who is a pediatrician) noticed a couple key 'markers' of things Rose was doing in early January: the "W" sit, splits, hard time trying to crawl because her legs would sprawl out under her, and so forth. She told us what to tell our pediatrician, and we did so. At this point (third week in January), Rose had yet to pull herself up or crawl - both of which she began in the next few weeks.
She did qualify for 'First Steps,' a state-sponsored in-home physical therapy program. After working through questionnaires, meetings and evaluations, we began therapy with Rose two weeks ago. At this point it is for the next six months - Rose's low tone and flexibility will not, Lord willing, be a hindrance her whole life - the therapy is attempting to strengthen and work her muscles to the point where Rose is able to use them correctly, and from there the doctor and PT expect normal development.
So, it's just getting her there. Rose has to do exercises while sitting on an a big exercise ball. She does sit-ups, bounces, and is made to lean to the left and right (work out those obliques!). She also has to take a block from Daddy sitting in front of her, and turn around (while on the ball) to put it in the box held by Mommy.
She sits on an overturned underbed storage bin (a big plastic box) and needs to lean down sideways to grab a cookie or toy. She has to cruise all the way around the coffee table. She sits on the ground with her legs straight out, and sometimes curved in, stacking rings or working on a puzzle.
Sounds pretty simple right? Well, Rose is an easy kid - except for PT time. Michelle, her therapist, comes for one precious hour every week. Bobby and I need to do 15-20 minutes of assigned exercises with Rose every day between those visits. Right now we're working on teaching Rose to persevere, that therapy time means work, and that we mean that, really. So today - the little pass the block game between Mommy and Daddy on the ball? Complete and total melt-down. I had seen glimpses during Rose's last meeting with Michelle - she got angry real fast, and only worked if I left the room (she couldn't then try to crawl to me for sanctuary!). However, on our own it's pretty tough. Michelle has rightly said we can't stop an exercise if Rose gets mad - that just shows her melt-down = end of therapy. We just make the exercise a bit easier.
So please pray for us and Rose's progress. We're planning a couple longer Mom/Dad/Rose sessions, allowing time for the inevitable melt-down and long time it takes to get just a little done - hoping in time Rose will learn to do the exercises, that it's work, and it'll be done soon. We pray that she will continually develop, and her mad temper won't hinder that too badly. Michelle encourages us that Rose has great mind/body connection and a strong motivation to move - it's just getting her strong enough to do so!
Updates as they come...
