"We're Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!"

On Saturday, Bobby Rose and I went to the Louisville Zoo for the first time. It was a drizzly day, so almost no one was there - perfect for Rose to get plenty of animal-viewing time, as it was her first-ever zoo visit. We think she really liked it, although at this point any animal is still a "dog-gee!" We bought a year-long pass (it allows me, plus another adult, and any child under two is free) so we can go as a family or I can take friends. We're thinking the more often we go, the more Rose will start to recognize and enjoy the large variety of animals - and not think they're all doggies!

Looking at her first animal.

"Dog-gee!"

"Dog-gee!"

Lions. Really close it seems, though separated by a deep, deep moat.

Don't know if she really noticed them!

Cherokee Park

Early Saturday morning we loaded Rose in the car and drove for...five minutes! We were on a planned excursion to Cherokee Park, a beautiful wooded park right in the middle of Louisville. It has forest trails that run through it, play-grounds, a golf course, and a 2.5 mile looped walking/jogging/biking trail. While it isn't the same as driving to the ocean, we really appreciate the beauty of this outdoor open space. We parked at a top of a hill, put Rose in her stroller and headed off. I got some great pictures of the leaves changing color, mist rising out of the valley, and of course, the Rose E. Bear.

"If You Have a Problem with Butter, Just Use Cream!"

Julia Child is a cultural icon. Her skill, drive and wonderful ability to teach changed the shape of American food culture for the better. Because of her, women felt freed to try new, different and much more difficult things in the kitchen. As a former anthropology student and a person who loves to cook, I just find Child fascinating. So it was with much excitement that we went to the American History Smithsonian and saw her kitchen! We both loved the exhibit and had a blast looking at all her cool tools and gizmos. Enjoy some pictures below.

Turkey Run

For Father's Day I got Bobby a book of hikes within 60 miles of DC. On Saturday we went to a place called "Turkey Run" about 25 minutes away from our house in DC. We had a wonderful time.
